Sir,
For some time past, there have been incidents of organized dacoities in some parts of West Bengal. Kolkata and its neighborhood are the worst sufferers. Such incidents were very rare so far. But for the last few months, they have increased so much that everybody feels concerned about his safety. Coming in groups, the dacoits would attack the households and take away everything at gunpoint. A few people have lost their lives trying to resist them. People driving along the E.M. bypass in the late hours of night often become the targets of such heinous crimes. They are relieved of all their possessions. It appears the dacoities are committed in a preplanned manner. To isolate the victims completely, the electricity and telephone connections of the houses are cut off. Because of the panic created, hardly anybody dares to come forward to help. The police have not been able to cope with the situation. The crimes are committed with impunity.
In many areas, the local youths have formed groups to put check on this. It is time the government took strong measures to stop such dacoities and instill a sense of security into the people.
