Sir,

Different persons often propose to introduce more mini buses and buses for relief of the commuters. But they overlook certain important issues.

The city roads, which constitute barely six percent of the total area, are grossly inadequate for any addition to the fleet of transport. The overcrowded streets are gradually becoming narrower because of encroachments by hawkers whose numbers are daily increasing. Unless this problem is solved, any attempt to increase the fleet will be futile.

Any solution to Kolkata's transport problem depends on three factors: a check on the hawker menace, construction of more traffic-bearing roads, and expansion of the Metro system to include a few east-west corridors.

16B, Suren Roy Road,                                                                                                       Yours faithfully,
Kolkata-700 027.                                                                                                                    Gita Sen
