Sir,

Our festivals and there are quite a few of them in the Hindu calendar-are becoming a nightmare. I don't know who first thought of the idea of using the mikes on such occasions. However, fashion has caught on. I don't understand how the mikes add to the gaiety of the festival. They blare out nothing but cheap film songs at all hours of the day and night. As my house is within a hundred meters of one such Puja pandals, you can well imagine how disturbed I feel. Short of plugging my ears, I find it impossible to get a wink of sleep at night. It is nerve-racking; and after a sleepless night, nobody can do an honest day's work. You cannot protest; it will be, perhaps going against the public sentiment. Besides, the local rowdies are there to bully you if you do so.

In the old days, the religious occasions had a grace and dignity of their own. Now they are getting more and more noisy. There is every need for education of public taste in this matter of religious festivals. Through your esteemed column, I would request every young citizen to be thoughtful and refrain from using microphones indiscriminately.
