PRECIS
Think of the first human beings, living in small scattered groups, each made up of s few families. The members of each such group would hunt together and also fight other groups over things they needed. Soon, however, they came to see that it was useful to have some friends to help them. Therefore, they started to make friends with neighbouring groups, so that they might fight the others better. Then these friends came to live together and formed larger bodies called tribes. A tribe would not fight within itself, but quarrels went on between one tribe and another. Each, therefore, felt it necessary to grow larger and more powerful. So tribes began to join themselves together, or were swallowed up by some larger tribe. Bigger and bigger tribes came into being, and at last grew into what we call nations.
