    Rip Van Winkle was a simple but very lazy fellow. When his wife took him to task for this, he used to walk out with his gun and his dog for company. One day he met a group of strange-looking fellows in a place. He drank with them and soon fell fast asleep. When he woke up, there was no sign of the strange people nor of the dog. Suddenly he felt something strange on his face. To his surprise, he found that he had a long white beard. He found his gun lying on the grass, rusty and useless. His clothes were all rags; and his legs were so cold and stiff that he could hardly walk.
