Religion is a special form of awareness of the surrounding world,  which is based on the belief in the existence of one (or more) gods. It includes a set of moral and ethical conduct, which are usually related in the sacred texts.  Religion emerged in the form of different beliefs,  that appeared almost simultaneously with the emergence of mankind. Though we usually see religion as the Belief in one or more gods, this is not always the case. In Buddhism for example, there are no details. Some other religions too,  assert the existence of spiritual reality, separated from the material world. So,  not only Gods or goddesses,  but even spiritualism, and community belief are the roots of religion-- especially in countries like India.

 Religion is nothing but the teaching of humanity through sets of moral values. Some religion believes in the omnipotent of God,  some other religion believed in milliliters and some others believe in spiritual powers which cannot be understood by the mental world. India is a multi-religious country due to different Fates and beliefs.
