PRECIS
What preciously does happen, then, to a building when it is conscious that it is being seen and becomes ‘architecture’? Just the same that happens to hostess sitting at the head of her table, or to a cavalry horse riddle on parade. We do not see a different woman or different horse, nor any special act, movement, or utterance on the part of either. their faces and bodies are the same, and they continue to do what they would be doing if no one was about. and yet they do everything differently, they do it better, paying heed to the way it is done. They show that they are aware of other people's presence, and no doubt they draw a certain stimulus from this awareness. The result is that they tune up their behavior to a level that may be described as that of formal manners.
But the better they succeed in doing this, the more they will remain themselves, giving us an impression only of vitality, Of being at the top of their ‘form’ and able to do things in ‘style’. And that is the impression we receive from a building in which the quality of architecture is present. It, too, possesses ‘form’ and ‘style’.
